Labour still the only party representing our young

The alleged lie on scrapping tuition fees why Labour is still the best party for the youth

The issue of university tuition fees has recently risen again. The mainstream media have claimed the Labour Party has reneged on a manifesto pledge to scrap student tuition debt, the papers are citing this as a reason to question Labour’s candour.

This is a blatant lie.

in reality, the Labour Party is still 100% committed to scrapping tuition fees for students entering university. Labour was prepared to scrap tuition fees for this year’s cohort of university pupils if elected during the 2017 General Election. What Labour did not promise was to scrap the student debt of people who have already graduated from university, instead they claimed that they would try to solve that issue but they did not promise anything, thus when McDonell later said it was an ambition he was right.

Labour had worked out the cost of scrapping tuition fees for new pupils not for people already burdened by debt. Nonetheless though the Labour Party feels sympathetic to the hindrance of huge debt being placed on graduates, thus they want to mitigate its effects. This is why Labour still has it as an ambition to scrap existing debt.

The Labour Party is the only party that offers young people a bright line in this era of austerity and cuts. We have tried in the last 7 years the Tory economics of austerity and cutbacks which has resulted in no major reduction of the deficit.

It is now time to embrace Labour’s usage of Keynesian economics, we need wages to rise again in line with living costs, we need our students to not be burdened with debt the moment they start working life and we need affordable housing once more. Labour are the only party that can offer people, especially the youth this. Keynesian economics could actually be thing that saves the UK, people may be inclined to disagree however, I would say after the last 7 years of austerity we ought to give Keynesian economics a chance.

Unfortunately all the other parties are committed to the Neo-liberal agenda which entails a devoted commitment to the unfettered free-market, this will always result in the corporations having a monopoly over resources. Labour would challenge the monopoly of corporations over industries and resources in the UK by re-nationalising several industries e.g. the railways and the Royal Mail etc. Labour would also introduce nationalised competitors in industries such as the utilities companies like water and electricity companies, this would be done to ensure private companies have to lower their own costs or risk everyone flocking to their state counter-parts. It would also bring in huge revenue to treasury. We have tried privatisation of these industries due to being persuaded that it would improve efficiency and lower costs however, as the railways have shown, this not the case. Ever since the railways in this country have been nationalised, we have had to deal with higher-priced train tickets and little improvement in service. Contracts have been sold off to foreign corporations and governments. When the profits should really stay in the UK. Adding market forces is meant to lower costs and improve efficiency due to making companies to compete with each other, this has not worked with the railways. Instead our rail was sold off on the cheap to rich corporations with little interest in competition. This is why the railways ought to be re-nationalised and this is why utility companies ought to have state competitors, this way industry won’t be dominated by greedy and profit-obsessed corporations who are apathetic to the plight of consumers. The baby boomer should never have sold off our public assets and burden our young with the debt. Millennials will put that right.

However the more dire issue of the day for Millennials is the housing crisis. Generations before have seen stagnant economy and a dire jobs market but never before has the housing market in this nation been so bad for first time buyers.

The housing crisis in the UK has been a plight of our nation for the last few years. The lack of housing has caused a massive surge in homelessness. The Labour Party is the only party which can resolve the housing crisis.

The Labour Party has pledged to build an additional 1 million homes. In their manifesto they claimed that by the end of the next Parliament they would be building 100,000 council and housing association homes per year for a genuinely for affordable rent or sale. The Tories have pledged no such number and are ideologically opposed to building affordable housing, claiming it breeds Labour voters.

Not only would Labour build more homes to solve the housing crisis, they would also build better and safe homes. They would improve things such as insulation in order to save people money on heating and reduce Winter deaths which can easily be prevented. After the tragic events of the Grenfell Tower fire which truly highlighted the effects of Tory building policy which puts profit before the welfare of occupants, we need a Labour government that will build better and safe houses for everyone not just the wealthy.

Labour will build lots of affordable houses. Truly affordable houses. That will be owned and sold by the state to young families. Not property developers. This would also assist in helping cure the epidemic of homelessness that has struck Britain since the Tories gained power.

The Tories moaned about students voting in this election. The surge of youth voters really is a problem for them. They may call Millennials entitled, but this is just a front. Because they know they offer our youngest generation nothing. Labour truly understand Millenials. They are not entitled, they want an education to earn a job and a house. Hardly asking for the stars.
